I have a new gym!

and could not be more excited!!  My friend and I went there yesterday to check it out, and after our tour we both signed up on the spot.  They have a special summer deal – only $115 for the summer and that includes about 15 cardio classes, free weights, state of the art treadmills, bike machines – and a nice locker room with towel service!

the locker room

And probably the coolest bike machine ever!  You can sign up with a user id.  When you ride a particular course, the next time you log in, you have a “ghost” rider which is your previous ride to see if you can beat your last time!

The best part is that I’ll be able to do a spin class twice a week at 7:15 in the morning!!  That is the one class I’ve missed most since leaving a gym with classes.

Breakfast yesterday was Chobani peach yogurt and a flat out breakfast pizza!

Breakfast comes in at 378 calories, 45 carbs, 35 protein, 9.6 fat and 10.7 fiber

I didn’t bring a lunch yesterday because I thought my friend and I would just grab something after the gym tour.  I forgot I had to cover the front desk during lunch, so I had 1 1/2 servings of a can of tomato soup.  I would have eaten the whole thing, but that would have been about 120% of my sodium for the day!

After the gym I was still hungry so we stopped by McDonald’s.  I got the Southwest salad, and I have to tell you  . . . I loved it! I took off the tortilla chips, and only used half of the salad dressing, but the dressing made it – it was nice and spicy!  So with the soup and the salad, lunch comes in at505 calories, 66 carbs, 34 protein, 12 fat and 1.5 fiber.

For dinner I had surf and turf on the brain.  I decided to get Tony salmon, and while I love grilled shrimp, I wanted something different.   My sister and I used to work at a high end restaurant in high school that had the best New Orleans bbq shrimp.  The only problem was that it had like a stick of butter in the sauce – but to take a fresh piece of bread and dip it in the spicy broth was something to behold!  And now that I think about it, I probably was too chicken to try the shrimp and only ate the broth!

Here is my light version!  You can do this on the stove, but I did mine in a cast iron skillet on the grill.

Barbecue Shrimp Recipe (printer friendly version here)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon dried rosemary
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon Tabasco
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 pound shrimp, deveined but shell on
1/4 cup chicken broth

  1. Combine all ingredients in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Bring mixture to a simmer and cook, 3-5 minutes until shrimp turn pink.
  2. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve with lemon and French bread to dip up the flavorful sauce!

I actually forgot the lemon part – that would have been great!  I was mad when I was cleaning up and saw the lemon on the counter!

ready for the grill!

So seven shrimp were a serving!  I ended up pouring half the sauce over all my plate, so not only were the shrimp spicy, but also the steak (which I overcooked!) and corn!

Update because I can never remember!  I am submitting my grilled barbecue shrimp to Christina’s Friday First!

dinner: 550 calories, 35 carbs, 64 protein, 17.9 fat and.9 fiber

  1. That gym looks so nice! The locker room is so clean and fresh. I would have joined on the spot, too!

  2. SO glad you like the new gym! I hope it works out for you! I just need to quit dusting the treadmill and actually USE it! The shrimp looks awesome! Thanks!

  3. That gym looks amazing! I would have wanted to move in!

    Your shrimp looks delish!!

  4. It’s funny….that gym looks like my gym! I always forget how spoiled I am. But that’s why we pay the big bucks (like $130 a month for two people). But I love it. And Noel loves that bike you showed…he always tries to beat his ghost!

I’m actually off today too…so four day weekend!

  5. My gym at school has those same bikes – I keep thinking I will like them, but they feel too much like a video game to me! 😀

    Yummy lookin’ shrimpies!

  6. Oh how fun!! I bet joining a new gym will really make working out so much more exciting!! 🙂

  7. this is so exciting! everything is so fresh, clean, brand new, fabulous! and how amazing is that locker room with the wood panelling ❤ ENJOY IT LOVE!

  8. That gym looks amazing!!! I would love it – and the bike with the ghostrider looks so fun! Congratulations – you will have a rockin’ bod by the end of this summer!!!

  9. your new gym is so nice – makes even ME want to work out!

  10. fitandfortysomething

oh the gym looks great! nothing like something new to get your mojo going!

  11. Your new gym looks spectacular, I’m so jealous. 🙂

Your shrimp dinner also looks amazing, HOLY YUM!

  12. The new gym sounds good! Glad to hear you can get back to spin class. As you know, we go 2-3 times a week. It will probably be less for me as I start really training for the 1/2 marathon but we do enjoy it. Also looking at getting two new bikes because I think we will really enjoy it.

Oh the shrimpies sound and look great!

  13. I WISH I could be that excited about exercising, maybe I just need an exercise buddy. But I am excited about that breakfast pizza and barbeque shrimp you made!

  14. Wow, that gym looks amazing! I like the “ghost rider” aspect of the bike machine – that’s really cool. Kind of like in the Olympics when they show that red line of the World Record or Olympic Record in the current race’s progress.

Holy cow the shrimp looks delicious! I can’t get Johnny to touch any seafood w/ a ten foot pole. He says it “isn’t food” and it all looks like it should be on a deserted island or from outer space. The only time I had a cajun style shrimp was in Mississippi – an authentic po’ boy. Mmm that was a good 10 years ago and I still think about it sometimes! haha

Oh and I like McDonald’s salads too! Johnny and I are still mourning the Asian chicken salad being discontinued. That was the best flavor combination w/ the almonds and dressing and edamame! Luckily we can still get the dressing at the grocery store, or I’d be in major withdrawals! Newman’s is the BEST!

Thanks for sharing with Friday Firsts and for the shout out!

  15. Congrats on the new gym membership. It looks really nice. That rocks that you can get to spin classes. I use the base gym and it is pretty nice. The best feature is the view. It overlooks the ocean. I find myself attempting to whale watch and then almost fall off the treadmill. I am truly spoiled now. In other, more depressing news, the bathroom in our home is falling apart and I am trying to avoid getting in the way.

  16. Oh yeah Shrimp!!! I can totally remember eating that shrimp! I can’t wait to make it Biz! Great job and thanks for the shout out!

  17. Yum! Might have to make this shrimp on Memorial Day! Have a happy 3-day weekend!

  18. erintakescontrol

We have those Expresso bikes at my gym – LOVE them! I also love that southwest salad from McD’s – the other food options may not be the best, but that salad is off the chain!!!

  19. Hi!
Those shrimp look amazing and I look forward to trying them sometime!
Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier, I’ve been really enjoying reading yours!
The gym is very impressive, especially the exercise bike with the ghost rider!

  20. Your new gym looks AWESOME! I hate most gym locker rooms, but that actually looks luxurious and fancy 🙂

That is one of my favorite Micky D salads. I love that the whole thing is so low cal, even the dressing!

  21. WOW! That gym looks like a spa!!

  22. Wow, that gym looks fantastic, Biz! Wish ours had an Expresso bike, that looks really cool. (Although I’m pretty happy with my gym overall.) Glad you’ll get to enjoy spin class again!

And I think I’m going to have to get a cast-iron skillet for our BBQ, because your shrimp and scallop dishes look heavenly. And because our kids hate it when we cook seafood indoors. 😉

  23. Wow, that gym looks incredible!!! You like spicy food, huh? Not me, but I do love shrimp!

  24. Man, I want your gym. Mine is good, but we definitely don’t have fancy machines like that!

And I guess technically I have a 3 day weekend, although I don’t really have regular work weeks right now anyways. But I’m away for 3 days, and it happens to fall over a weekend, so we’ll go with it!

  25. Enjoy the gym! It looks great!

The shrimp look & sound fantastic!

    Have a great, long weekend!

  26. wow, that gym looks amazing…and so does that meal! YUM!

Also, did you design your own header or have someone make it for you? I LOVE IT! I’m looking for a change and don’t know where to go – any help would be really appreciated! Thanks! 🙂

  27. That gym looks nice. I hate my gym, but it’s cheap and they sort of have a monopoly on gyms in the area anyway.

  28. ooh great gym and great price! Nice! That shrimp looks awesome – love the sound of the ingredients!

  29. Yum this looks great! Have you tried the salt yet?

    Chef E

  30. Oh my, your gym is BE-A-U-TIFUL! Enjoy it you lucky gal!

  31. That’s a sweet gym and deal you got! Wish I had one of those virtual machines for this winter!

  32. Biz,

Great new gym! Lucky lady!! I’ve been looking for a yogurt I will actually eat and won’t send me into a sugar coma at the same time. I’m always looking for natural protein choices (in addition to tofu, PB, nuts, etc…) since I don’t eat much meat. Though I tolerate Splenda, I don’t like artificial sweeteners in yogurt – gross, and most have so MUCH sugar that well, they’re just not possible… I recently tried Stonyfield’s greek yogurt (15 grams of carbs per serving and fairly LF) – lots of fruit on the bottom and creamy. Last night I tried Chobani (on sale at our grocery store and meets the sugar/fat requirements). Not bad. Creamy and thick. 21 grams of carbs, I believe? Reasonable. Less fruit than Stonyfield, but a little less $$, too. Glad to see it’s on your list of good stuff. 🙂 Thoughts on other brands you’ve tried?

    Thanks for sharing!

    • Fage is my absolute favorite, but at $2 a container, not in my grocery budget! I can usually get Chobani for $1.29, which isn’t too bad.
