How’s Tony?

I love that people have been asking how Tony’s doing – either in comments or in side emails.  We are just over five weeks after his colon cancer surgery and I am happy to say that he’s doing a lot better!  This has been a hard recovery.  Since they removed so much of his colon, let’s just say that it takes a while for things to start moving, and sometimes there was no warning that things were moving.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned that he still has a four inch hole next to his belly button – apparently they want the inside to heal before the outside does.  He sees the surgeon every Monday for check-ups – a couple weeks ago the doctor said “it looks good, but call us right away if your intestines come out of this hole.”  What??!!

Happy to report, his insides are staying inside!  I asked him yesterday if I could take a picture of him to post, and of course, he couldn’t give me a normal picture – but that’s my Tony!

I love you 😀

My camera battery was charging during breakfast yesterday – you didn’t miss much – I had a zucchini egg white omelet with a slice of toast – 5 Points Plus.

I called Tony before working out and he asked what I was going to do.  I said “I feel like running.”  He was like “I don’t think those words would ever come out of my mouth!”  So I ran.  I warmed up for 3 minutes, then put the treadmill on 5.0 mph, and then the last half mile I went at 6.0 mph – wow, that seemed really fast for me!  I finished in 38:08, which included the 3 minute warm up.  I am still looking for a local race.  But running outside is so much different than a treadmill.  I have a fear of starting out too fast, and then having to walk – with the treadmill you can keep a steady pace.

My deli just started selling a brand of deli meats and cheeses called Deitz & Watson.  They had a table display with some of their selections.  They had a lean corned beef that comes in at 1 point an ounce.  And this store sells a wide variety of local breads – this dark whole rye is 2 points!  So with 2 points of swiss cheese, zero point sauerkraut, and Dijon mustard instead of Thousand Island dressing – my skinny Reuben sandwich is only 6 points. 😀

I "fried" it in Pam to crisp it up - so delicious!

On the side I steamed 4 ounces of potatoes and 2 ounces of green beans, then just tossed them in 1 tsp. of prepared pesto – 3 Points, with strawberries for dessert.  LUnch comes in at 9 points.

When I got home, the sun actually made an appearance.  I took my new 55-200 lens outside – I took these pictures about 35 feet away.  Ed looks so serious!

Tony wasn’t hungry for dinner, so I got to have one of my favorite things – pork chops with sauteed apples and sauerkraut. 😀

When I took my pork chops out,  I didn’t realize I had bought pork “cutlets” so they were super thin.  Each one weighed 3 ounces before cooking, so I cooked two.  I heated  my cast iron skillet on high, then sprayed with Pam right before adding the pork.  These only took 2 minutes a side – I removed to a plate, then added 1 sliced Granny Smith apple, 3/4 cup of sauerkraut and 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds.

Once they were done, I added the pork chops back in, and added 2 tablespoons of spicy BBQ sauce – dinner was a delicious 9 points.

not the most colorful dish, but this was so good

I loved the addition of caraway seeds to the kraut

Stats for Thursday:

  • 33 points (including peanut m&m’s before working out and one glass of wine)
  • 0 flex points remain
  • I used 4 of 19 activity points
  • Weigh In Tomorrow – I am .2 pounds away from my 5% and 1.2 away from 10 pounds lost 😀

I get to wear jeans to work today – spring cleaning today.  😀  Hope everyone has a great weekend – I am probably going to post tomorrow because I have a pumpkin coconut soup and thai basil wonton cups for lunch today – can’t wait for lunch!

Any big weekend plans?  We haven’t any it will be a low key weekend for us – the weather is supposed to be cold anyway.  😦

  1. Don’t worry about running outside–your body will adjust to it. In the long run, most people find running outside to be EASIER than running on the treadmill.

I’m glad to see Tony is doing so well!

I’m running the National Half Marathon Relay tomorrow. It’s going to be freezing!

  2. SO glad Tony is doing well!!! Great picture ;). Your sandwich looks yummy. I love rye and dark whole rye sounds just wonderful. Weekend plans? Date night and???

  3. I’m so glad to hear that Tony is doing so good, love the picture! You are doing awesome with your running, I think that you would do great in a race, you would find your pace and be okay 🙂

That dinner looks fantastic! I love that combination. Our weekend plans include exploring Charleston and hopefully meeting up with my brother in law. Hope you have a great weekend Biz!

  4. Do you all live in a cave? Dietz and Watson IS the BOMB! We have been eating it for years and I did not realize it wasn’t a national brand. I am so happy it made it’s way to you. My favorite is the lean [super rare] roast beef and the swiss. OH goodness. Now I want corned beef too. That is a nice looking lunch – very filling a few points.

Tony is such a cutie – glad we got to see a pic’. Please tell him to keep his “innards” in him. [that would, so, wig me out, but glad he is doing well.]

  5. Yay for Tony! You look GREAT, Tony!!!

Awesome eats today, Biz! We have D & W lunchmeats in our area, so I’ll have to check out the corned beef. I LOVE Reubens!

Fingers crossed for your weigh-in tomorrow!

  6. I worry abit about running on the tarmat too instead of the treadmill but talking to my doctor yesterday he says walk/sprint/walk/sprint and it’ll just happen and work out fine. I’m willing to try once this darn snow is gone.
I am so glad that Tony is healing and doing good. It was so hard on him and his body, I’m glad he’s healing and getting better.
I so wish I knew how much a point was when you say that. Cuz some of your dishes are to die for but since I count calories not points it’s a bit harder, no impossible but harder.
Take care and have a blessed day.

  7. My BJs sells Dietz & Watson meats at their deli. Guess what I bought? Corned Beef! Guess what I ate for dinner on Tuesday night? A skinny reuben!! Guess what I’m wearing at work today? Jeans!!!

It’s cracking me up that we are mirroring each other so much this week Biz. I guess we’ll chalk it up to great minds thinking alike 😀

Ok, now you know I have to yell at you a little about the run. Just do it. Dammit. Who care if you start too fast and end up walking a little. Big deal. It takes practice to pace yourself in a race and that includes elite runners. The natural adreniline you feel makes you want to go fast. But it’s such a great mental boost and you’re running so well on the TM. Just Do It.

  8. ha, love the picture 🙂 so happy to hear things are going well!

  9. Tony is looking gooood! Glad he’s feeling better. 🙂

Biz. Biz Biz Biz. You MUST enter a race! You are a runner, girl! Go run a race! And guess what? Everyone starts out too fast. It’s exciting, you can’t help yourself! But go do one – they are so fun. Go. Sign up now. You won’t regret it!

  10. Oh man that 4inch hole would scare me!!!! Lookin’ good Tony!

You are getting so speedy with your runs, Biz! I’m proud of you!

Andy and I are going to a Wine event in Los Angeles and I have to write a paper over the weekend. Might be a little hectic but that’s okay! Sunday will be a day of NO plans which always makes me feel relaxed.

  11. So glad Tony is feeling better!

As for this weekend, Kev and I are going to spin class in the morning and then spending the rest of the weekend doing taxes. I am not looking forward to it. It will most likely be the 1st year I have to pay YIKES!

    Oh and Ed is PRECIOUS!

  12. erintakescontrol

I love the look on Tony’s face! It almost says, “hey look! INTESTINES!” lol and I have been eating a TON of skinny reubens lately. Need to use up the giant jar of kraut I bought!

  13. So glad to hear about Tony!

Um, will you come over and share your lunch with me?!

  14. Hi Tony! Thanks for keeping us updated on him! xoxo

  15. Lookin’ greaaaaaaaat Tony, love the pic!
I’ve got to try a skinny Reuben, I love rye bread. We don’t have lots to do this weekend, just nice and laid back. 🙂 Have a good one, looking forward to your post about the soup and wonton cups!

  16. Dumb weather.

Tony’s so cute! I’m so glad he’s improving. The intestines coming out is a wee scary….not gunna lie! I remember in the hospital while on the trauma unit, often times they would leave people open because they couldn’t close them back up with all the swelling. I’m sure that has something to do with it, too. Colon surgery is major and he’s probably more comfortable allowing the swelling to go down this way. 🙂

Have a great weekend, Biz! Enjoy your new lens…jealous 🙂

  17. So glad to hear he’s doing well! I’ve been praying for you guys!

  18. We have Dietz and Watson here and I love it. Will have to try the corned beef – nothing is better than a ruben!

Tony looks quite hale and hearty – so good to see! What a relief it must be to be where you are now. I think a pork and apple and cabbage dinner is on the menu for us this weekend after seeing yours! (Sauerkraut is too sauer!)

Nice job on the kick ass run. Enjoy your youth and un-arthritic knees while you can! You’re doing fantastic.

  19. Wow, it’s been 5 weeks already? Glad Tony’s doing better (and that his intestines haven’t fallen out!). 🙂
Your meals always look so gourmet and well-rounded. I need to follow your example…..

  20. I’m so happy Tony is doing well!! Thinking good thoughts for you both 🙂

  21. I love running outside! So much better!!!! Try it!
Glad Tony is feeling better. That hole comment would have freaked me out!
Your meals always look so good. I love how creative you are with your points! Have a fabulous weekend!

  22. I’m so glad that Tony is doing better! I love his pics! He seems like such a fun-loving guy!

Ryan will be home TODAY! So that is what I’ll be doing this weekend! I’m SO excited to see his handsome face!

  23. Glad Tony is doing so well.
    Love the eats 🙂

  24. YAY!!!! So glad Tony is doing so well! Fun photo! And I have to give a big “awwwww” to your gorgeous dog!!! (wow, amazing pics from so far away – what a lens!!) As always, your food looks yummy! Good luck at weigh in tomorrow! I know you’ll get that 5%!!!! Have a great weekend Biz!

  25. haha, that’s the face he made when they told him to call if his intestines fell out! So glad to hear he’s doing better. It sounds like his appetite has been much less ever since the surgery and I’m wondering if he’s lost a lot of weight! When my Dad was in the hospital for only a week, I think he lost like 20 pounds. It was crazy! I think your dog Ed is so freakin adorable. I want to see a video of him…and a video of Hannah breaking into dance. Perhaps they could do it together-haha.

  26. So glad to hear Tony’s diong better! I never get normal pics of J either. haha

  27. thanks for the update! i’m glad to hear that tony is doing well, and acting as goofy as always 🙂

i love the pictures of your dog…his coat looks so shiny and glossy!!

  28. My grocery store sells Deitz and Watson meats…for the most part, they are pretty good. I still like Boar’s Head best though! But for such lean corned beef? how can you go wrong?? 🙂

Love the pic of Tony. Just love it. 🙂 Good job on the running. Cold here too…boo to that! Supposed to go down into the teens tonight…what is up with that? lol

Looking forward to a really low key weekend here, after such a busy one last week…but I will be worrying about the daughter’s return trip from Florida. Boy, is she in for a rude awakening with the weather. They have had sun and 80’s all week…I cannot even imagine! lol

  29. Awww…I love Ed. Give him a snuggle for me. I’m really glad that Tony’s feeling well!

  30. I laughed about the belly button thing the doctor said…and then stopped myself wondering if that really IS a caution? The doctor is joking, right?! In any case, I’m happy that Tony is much better!!!! Haha, that pic of him says it all. 😀

  31. Ha Tony is awesome! He looks great. He’s lost weight too hasn’t he?
Your food makes me wish my monitor was scratch and sniff!

  32. Wonderful report – so glad to see that he’s doign so well! And that picture is AWESOME haha – why won’t the boys let us take “normal” pictures?!

  33. I LOVE that picture of Tony! He seems to have such a fun, young spirit. 🙂

And….I even had trouble just reading the bit about intestines – I can’t imagine that at all!

  34. So glad Tony is doing well! I ran my first (and only) 5K back in September and I was so nervous b/c almost all of my training (what there was of it) was done on the treadmill. It was too hot to run outside! The day of the race was a nice (and cooler) day, but you’re right, running outside is very different. I was pretty proud of myself, considering I am 38, it was my first race, and I ran it in 36 minutes and something. I beat my sister, who is 10 years younger (only by seconds however) so I was happy 🙂 I had to walk a little, but not nearly as much as I had anticipated.

  35. LOL – love that picture – I feel like it’s perfect for what you were talking about! 🙂 And it shows he’s got a wonderful sense of humor! 🙂 Glad things are coming along! (albeit slowly!)

  36. SOOOO glad that Tony is feeling better!!!
