Hanging with Hannah…Baked Falafels…Almost Just Overweight!

Two reasons I look forward to Wednesday.  First of all – its starts off with bagel Wednesday!  I am so happy I am stealing Lori’s idea on this.   I had a Pam fried egg in the middle of my spicy jalapeno cheddar bagel – breakfast comes in at 10 points.

Things have been so crazy at my office – nothing I can go into detail here, but let’s just say I couldn’t wait to leave to go workout.  I decided to do a 5k, but break it up and do some sprint work.  I don’t know about you, but the first 10 or 15 minutes I run are just awful and I want to stop.  Then all of a sudden, my breathing is fine and I get my rhythm.  😀

I ended up doing 3.5 miles in 45 minutes with a warm up and cool down.  My sprints were in .2 mile increments, then I’d walk .2, increase the speed, etc.  My last sprint was 7.0 mph! Melissa told me I could in an email a while back (um, her whole run was at that pace!), but I didn’t believe her – thanks for the push Mel!

I had baked falafels on the lunch menu yesterday.  Um, pretty sure my co-workers thought this was a home run!  One even wrote me “I think every Wednesday should be Falafel Wednesday!”

Baked Falafel

  • makes 4 patties – 5 points plus each

  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley
  • 2 cups drained canned chickpeas
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat bread crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. lemon zest
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • cracked pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper
  • a couple drops of sriracha
  • 2 tsp. olive oil (for baking sheet)

Heat oven to 400 degrees.  Put your baking sheet with 1 tsp. of oil on the pan while your oven heats up.  Mix all the ingredients in a food processor.  Form into equal size patties.  Bake for 10 minutes, add second tsp. olive oil and flip.  Cook an additional 10 minutes.

I served with a 3 pt. whole wheat pita (3 pts.), lettuce, red peppers and for my two co-workers, tomatoes and . . .this is what I great friend I am . . .sliced onions! And a serving of tzatziki sauce (1 pt.)  This giant plate of food was 9 points.

I actually thought the falafel could have been spicier, but my friends loved it.  I may have added a splash of Tabasco to mine after the picture was taken! 😀

Second reason I love Wednesdays?  It’s Hanging with Hannah Day!  We were going to do a group class, but by the time she got home from school, none of the times worked out.  We left the house around 6:15 – went to the gym and I did 20 minutes on the roller blade machine (very hard!) while Hannah ran on the treadmill.

Then we got our suits on.  Our gym’s pool not only has lap lanes, but what they call a “leisure” pool that is 10 degrees warmer than the lap pool.  We got in the lap pool but it was so cold!  So we went to the warmer one – for the first five minutes we found those weighted rings so we were throwing them and then seeing who could get to them first – we were laughing so hard!

Then an instructor came over and said “those are for swim lessons” and took them away. 😦  We both decided we need to get our own pool toys for next time. 😀  So we did laps for 15 minutes.  Then the best part . . . 10 minutes in the hot tub!  It was so relaxing.

On the way home we stopped at Chipotle.  There is a site where you can build your meal.  I chose:

  • chicken
  • cilantro lime rice (my favorite!)
  • black beans
  • corn (that had hidden red onions in it I didn’t see – had to pick those out)
  • lettuce
  • spicy red salsa

My bowl comes in at 12 points

I ate about 3/4 of  it and 3 points of chips, so I am still calling dinner 12 points.

I got a junk email yesterday from Dr. Gourmet – its a site where you can find recipes for different types of diets, mostly medically related, such as diabetes, low fiber, low salt, etc.   It had a BMI calculator and I was curious, even just losing 8 pounds, where I ranked on the chart.  I am 5.2″ and 165 pounds.  I am still obese according to that chart.  But guess what?  In 7 more pounds lost, at 158 pounds, I will be in the overweight category!

So I am going to be breaking up my weight loss goals into smaller ones.  Instead of the typical “I want to be 135 pounds” my only goal in sight is to be just overweight, and lose 7 pounds.  I think it sounds much more attainable, and then figure out from there what my next mini-goal will be! 😀

Stats for Wednesday:

  • 36 points (including 2 glasses of wine while watching the Top Chef reunion and Storage Wars with Tony)
  • 10 flex points remaining
  • 45 minute treadmill walk/jog/sprint
  • 20 minute roller blade (the machine said I went 5.6 miles!)
  • 20 minutes swimming

Off to make some breakfast pizza – I haven’t had that in a while!  Have a great day – its another overcast day in Chicagoland – hope its sunny where you are! 😀

  1. I am so happy that I found your blog! You feature the most amazing food. Maybe I should try Weight Watchers and counting points. I have never had falafel; but I love Mediterranean food and I love bean burgers so I’m sure I would love this one. I was just talking to my sister-in-law about how setting small goals seems to be the best way instead of setting huge overwhelming goals. We both agreed to try that. Thank you for the inspiration and encouragement!

  2. love bagel wednesdays! maybe i should get on board too 🙂 i also really like the falafel recipe and how smart to bake it 🙂 have a great day!

  3. How much do I love that you and Hannah got busted by the lifeguard?!? Geez, try and have a little fun and what happens? The MAN gotta bring you down. 😉

Hope things improve on the work front. You do not need that stress and I’m sorry you’re having to deal with that on top of everything else.

  4. I made baked falalel a few weeks ago but I lost the pictures, so I need to make them again before posting. They were awesome so I don’t mind. Yours look good!

Aren’t you excited to be overweight?? 🙂

  5. I hope today is a lot less stressful! The falafel looks so good! I always like a little extra heat in my eats :). And hooray for time with Hannah! So jealous of your Chipotle dinner. They won’t open one in Charleston for some reason 😦 So we have our Chipotle like places, but no Chipotle! The smaller weight loss goals sounds like a fabulous idea. Can’t wait to hear your updates

  6. That’s a great idea for a new goal 🙂

    Andddd I LOVE falafel!

  7. Well it’s not like there was a lesson going on at the time was it? Goodness graciousm you two actually had the gall to have fun! That lifeguard needs to get a life – or put those precious toys away!

    Falafel mmmmmmm.

  8. LOL @ Shelley’s comment! I agree!!!

    Have a great day, Biz!

  9. yay for breakfast pizza! I’m glad you and Hannah had a good time together by what is a roller blade machine? eek – sounds painful! cilantro lime rice?! Yum. Best of luck on your new weight loss goal!!

  10. I love falafel too and I make patties in a skillet that are amazing

What a shame the swim instructor spoiled your fun!

  11. mmm the falafels look good!!! I LUV Chipotle and I use that calculator lots! 🙂

  12. Hooray for bagel wednesday!

Charts blow. I am still overweight by charts. I wear a size 8 and I am overweight. Lame.

  13. I’m going to have to give your falafels a try. I baked some before and wasn’t impressed. Not sure if that meant I didn’t like falafels, didn’t care for the baked kind or just had a rotten recipe.

LOL…my daughter has some princess diving sticks you can borrow! 😀 Lifeguards are so hit or miss. Some play exactly by the book and some actually use their common sense. My daughter and I have been yelled at by lifeguards for doing nothing other than sitting in the water prior to a lesson. (Instead of sitting out of the water to wait for the lesson to begin.) They need to get over themselves!

Dito what Lori said. BMI sucks. I wear a 4/6 pant size and am “overweight”.

  14. OMG….I cracked up when I read you and Hannah got “in trouble” in the pool!!! Too funny!!! Your falafal lunch looks incredible, and the offer for me to come and be one of your co-workers stands!!! (they’re so lucky!!) 🙂 Yay for your new goal!!! Have a great day Biz!

  15. THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS RECIPE!!!!! I love falafel so much!

  16. I totally pictured the 2 of you in the pool diving for rings – awesome! 🙂
And I’m so on board with Bagel Wednesday – it’s a great idea!

  17. What is a rollerblade machine?? It sounds fun!

I love falafel, and this baked version sounds great!

    • The roller blade machine? Think elliptical but it goes side to side, instead of back and forth. It’s all quads/hamstrings and calves – a killer! 😀

  18. Fallafel looks good 🙂

Love the Hanging with Hannah and sorry the pool police got you!!!

  19. The baked falafel patties look so yummy, need to make those for my daughter!

  20. Woo congrats on being overweight and not obese!! (note, heavy sarcasm! I think you are TINY in real life!!)

You still rock my socks off that you do 5ks during your lunch break though — you rule!!

  21. Haha, I love that story about the toys for swim lessons. What a grouch. It’s not like you gals were being destructive or anyone else needed them, geesh! Your falafel sounds so good! I need to make baked falafel again….like you said, it’s a homerun!

  22. I can’t believe those assholes took away your toys! The nerve!

I hate BMI and other calculators of the like. They just make me feel bad about myself. It sucks that society has deemed a certain “type” as acceptable. I think we need to focus on being as healthy as we can be and call it a day. Weight and sizes are just a number and it shouldn’t be what we base our self worth on. I’m scared to have kids because I don’t want them to freak out about weight and pant sizes. Yuck!

  23. bookmarked!!!!!! it loooks goooooooooood!!!! thanks for the recipe doll! ❤

  24. I LOVE FALAFEL! Yours looks so good. I need to make some–it’s been a long time. Your time with Hannah sounds fun but boo to the guy/gal who took your toys!

  25. I love the idea of mini goals! I need to set some more mini goals in my life…I think that they may make my larger goals much more manageable!

Glad that you and Hannah had a good night!

  26. WOOT WOOT!!!! AWESOME job on the RUN!!!! I’m so proud of you for pushing yourself to that level!!! Didn’t it feel great when you finished! i know that’s always my motivation to go faster because then i’m like, dang! my body is a rock star since it can go that fast!!! Again, GREAT JOB!!!! So proud of you!!!

And geez, now I want a bagel AND falafel. And I already ate dinner…but that was like, 4 hours ago…hrm… 😀
