Determination . . .

Wow, thanks for all your wonderful comments to my post yesterday!  It was just the spark I needed to get me out of my funk, slow down, figure out what I want and make a plan to get there.

And to answer Shelley’s question about my blood sugar numbers, for whatever reason, there are peaks and valleys – I seem to do the same thing (i.e. take the same amount of insulin for a cup of rice) and sometimes get different results.  There are SO many variables that I just try to do the best I can – about 10% of my day is figuring out carbs, when to eat, how hard to work out – if I wrote about what a pain in the ass it was to manage my diabetes, my posts would be so boring and whiney! 😀

All I know is that being as healthy a diabetic as I can today, I’ll keep my feet and eyes later on in life.  I need to see Tony when we grow old! 😀

I had a great day yesterday.  I got up and did my “me” time of blogging, drinking coffee, reading the news.  I made an egg white sammie out of the bread I made the other day – when I weighed the original piece of bread I was going to use, it was 6 ounces which would have been 11 points on it’s own.  I cut the bread down, then scooped out some of the insides and ended up with a 3 ounce piece of bread for 6 points.  The rest: 1/3 cup egg white, 3/4 ounce cheese, 1/2 cup fresh spinach and a slice of ham with a cup of watermelon on the side:  10 points.

This picture is proof positive that just because you have a fancy camera, doesn’t mean it will automatically take great pictures! 😀

So while yesterday’s storms prevented me from working out at lunch, I wasn’t going to let 97 degree heat get in my way – I ended up doing a 50 minute walk/jog and it felt great.  I also discovered Pandora and put it on my blackberry!  I am sick to death of the songs on my iPod – as much as I try to shuffle songs, I don’t know why sometimes I hear the same song twice in 30 minutes.

One song that played was a song by Coldplay, and the lyrics really struck me:

Nobody said it was easy.  No one ever said it would be so hard.  I’m going back to the start.

So that’s what I am doing.  I am declaring a do over.  I can’t undo the past 10 days, but I can sure as hell make each day the best I can. 😀

I just enjoyed the music, thought about how nice the run will be today because the temps will be in the 70’s and sweat – glorious!  The only thing not glorious was encountering not one, not two, but THREE dead skunks in various forms of decay.  One was just a jaw bone and bushy tail – so stinky!  I had to change the side of the rode I was on 3 times. 😦

Lunch was a cup of leftover fried rice from the night before, though I subbed in 3 ounces of cooked chicken and added 1.5 cups of broccoli to bulk it up – lunch comes in at 10 points.

Dinner was sloppy joe’s, but I decided to make a sloppy joe salad.  Two cups romaine lettuce mix, cucumbers, red pepper, purple cabbage, 1/2 cup sloppy joes, and fat free ranch.  Dinner comes in at only 8 points!

I really love purple cabbage in salads.

But I really have TJ to thank for pulling me out of my funk.  Just yesterday she posted this video and it could not have been more motivating for me.  So I am stealing TJ’s determination!  Who’s with me?

  3. Your Mom’s comment yesterday cracked me up. “…..I could be wrong.” heehee I don’t have twins, but ask me one of the six birthdays and I mix them all up. All the time.

    I never thought to put sloppy joe mix [yum!] on a salad. Interesting.

    And you’re saving your eyes, feet, kidneys, and so much more…like your life! I have a YOUNG patient (type 1) that just this morning said to me, “I was diagnosed at 18 months with diabetes, I knew dialysis would eventually happen to me.” I wanted to correct the patient, because that’s not true at all, but I knew better…because he is on dialysis, and it’s sad. Very sad 😦

  5. I’ve been in a bit of slump myself lately. Too many vacations and giving in to temptation. I need to get my focus back, so I’m with you! I’ll start today at lunch and I’ll get my workout in before the rains come. It’s time… 🙂

  6. That sloppy joe salad looks great. I have been slowly cutting back on carbs to help with my weight watchers weight loss. For me, that means about one meal a day is salad with protein, but no grains.

    And boy, sodium! Monday I’d gained 1.6 lbs from last week. Because I ate out Friday, Saturday and Sunday (even though I stuck to my points and ate salad at least 2x). By Tuesday, the 1.6 lbs was off.

  7. I must be an idiot! Pandora on my phone!!! Now why didn’t I think of that? I’ve got tons of music on my ipod but am getting bored since I’ve increased my walks to 5 miles/day. Thank you so much for putting this out there about Pandora and your phone! Gosh, the simplest things escape me all the time. LOL

  8. Ugh – I can’t stand my Ipod right now either. I feel like I need to revamp my entire playlist. I love the idea of sloppy joe salad. What an inspirational video – it’s awesome!

  9. I’ve started preferring my sloppy joes over other other things than a bun lately. My fave lately is roasted broccoli.

  10. What a yummy looking salad, the cabbage really “pops!” Love the idea of a do-over, I’ve been feeling super blah lately after deciding not to run the marathon in October, and maybe that’s what I need too!

  11. Not being a numbers person, I would have a really difficult time being a diabetic. I can’t imagine what you must have to deal with, on a daily basis – and you know, you might want to write a special post one of these days, detailing everything. Because those people who have been warned by their doctors, and are on the verge of diabetes? THAT might be what they need to see – the reality of diabetes. Just a thought. 🙂

  13. Because of my celiac disease crap, I’ve been eating tons of salads. I should try that sloppy joe salad instead of with a bun. Great idea!

    I’m pulling out of my funk too. Going to do workout #2 of stage 1 in New Rules of Lifting for Women! We can do it!

  17. I think it is the slump time of summer, been going around. Vacation never helps, took me awhile to get back into the groove. This beautiful weather will be a huge help to get you back on the path!!

    LOVE LOVE LOVE pandora! (how did you not know of it before? LOL) My standard is foster the ppl radio! But every now and then, I like to discover new stations for what ever I am in the mood for.

  22. You know, it’s funny that when I had a plateau and gained some weight back, I tried really hard not to think of it as staring over, but continuing on. Because even when you gain, it is part of the process and you end up learning a lot from the parts that went awry.
