Winning! 5 Years in A Row!

Yep, I won prize for best/scarriest costume at my office party – I give you . . . Guy Fieri!

Pretty much everyone knew who I was – except one person wanted to know if I was Jimmy Buffet!  It was a fun day – hey, any time I can grill at work I am a happy camper!

We recently hired another attorney at our office (who came dressed as Dexter – it was great!).  So someone dressed up as a combination of all the people that didn’t get the job, a total of six people – you kinda had to be there, but one of the things on her costume killed:

Not joking, two candidates lied about their education – really??!!

One of my co-workers is the best baker – I had a small slice of her pumpkin coffee cake – holy smokes this was good – just imagine a pumpkin pie stuffed into a coffee cake. I am calling this piece 6 points.

I made Thai burgers, regular burgers and hot dogs, and it was pot luck after that.  So.Much.Food!  I think I did pretty good – I ate one Thai burger, salad, about 1/2 a cup of cheezy crock pot potatoes, and I had to go back for 1/2 a cup of buffalo chicken dip and 10 Fritos.  I am calling my lunch 19 points just to be on the safe side.

It was about 52 degrees, sunny and breezy – not too cool to grill!  My feet did get a bit nippy though!

I wanted to do an alternative burger, and took my inspiration from this recipe – it won $50,000 in a Build A Better burger contest in 2007.  Can you imagine winning 50k for a burger??!!  I did modify it though – I ditched the cilantro mayo and I couldn’t find Thai sweet chili sauce – all the Thai chili sauces I found were just spicy, so I added hoisin sauce to the burgers to get the balance.

Biz’s Thai Beef Burgers – Makes 6, 4 ounce patties with slaw – 320 calories, 22 fat, 7 carbs, 1 fiber and 20 protein – or 8 WW points – you need to add the points for the bun you choose – our buns were 3 points so my burger comes in at 11 points.  Not bad!

For the burgers:

  • 1.5 pounds 80/20 ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons Thai chili sauce
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro

Mix together the burgers and grill to desired temp.

For the “salad” topping:

  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 tablespoon peanut sauce
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrot
  • 1/2 cup chopped English cucumber
  • 1/2 cup of bean sprouts

Toss salad mixture well.  Divide salad mixture evenly over the Thai burgers.

I really loved these burgers – the contrast was great – spicy burger with crunchy flavorful slaw on top.  I’d definitely make these again.  (for me Tony – don’t worry!)

And we had so many desserts:  apple pie, red velvet cheesecake, butterscotch rice krispie treats – and this truffle – pudding, crushed Halloween oreos, whipped cream – how I didn’t stick a spoon in this I’ll never know!

The afternoon went by fast – I wish I could say that I was looking forward to getting home to give out candy – but we hardly get any trick or treaters – the houses are too far apart so the kids walk up to the neighborhoods so they can score more loot.  I miss that!

When I got home I waited by the front door for 45 minutes waiting for a trick or treater.  Tony and I went back and forth on what to have for dinner, finally settling on cheezy beefs.  It’s great with leftover beef – just thinly slice the leftovers and simmer it in beef broth with 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning.

I only had half an open face sandwich and 1/2 a cup of rosemary potatoes – 9 points.

The final picture didn’t turn out, but dinner was good!  And at 8:45, after having lost all hope of any trick or treaters – I got two!  Who were lucky enough to split 3 bags of candy – I let them take it all!  😀

Stats for Monday:

  • 38 points
  • no exercise
  • average blood sugar 134

Okay, go ahead and make me jealous – how many trick or treaters did you get?

  1. The costume rocks! It poured down rain all evening here 😦

I saw this and thought of you…. I’m going to try the beginner’s version 🙂

  2. Back home, we got our FIRST trick or treaters last year, after living there for over 10 years – and they were only because the neighbors finally had kids!

  3. Great costume!!!! Did you put the sunglasses on the back of your head when you weren’t wearing them on your face? Lol.
We had 4 trick or treaters. Seriously. 4. And not 4 groups, just 4 kids. Can you tell we live on a dead end street?

  4. Your costume ROCKs, Biz!! What a great work spread – love the Thai burgers, too!

I live at the top of a big hill, so I don’t get a ton of kids, but I try to make it worth their while by giving them lots of candy when they walk up! 🙂

  5. Awesome costume!!!

The top 5 interview errors are pretty funny. It’s really strange to me that people lie in interviews about their education or other things that can be so easily verified…

  6. Love your costume! We didn’t get many trick-or-treaters at all compared to the last few years!

  7. Love the costume! Especially the facial hair!

I had 200 pieces of candy and ran out 1 hour before trick or treating ended and I gave 1 piece of candy to each person – so we had a TON of trick or treaters! It was so much fun

  8. I love your costume! I’ve been watching DDD for hours..haha and I definitely think you did a good job on making yourself look like Guy!

  9. Lying to your education to a bunch of lawyers….what where they thinking???

    Your costume rocks!!!

We live in a small, but Halloween friendly neighborhood so we always get more than we can count. It was lighter this year, but we still got rid of 2 Costco size bags of candy! 🙂

  10. We had a bunch of trick or treaters this year – easily over 100. Some years it’s not as good, but this was a fun one, plus lots of cute costumes and sweet kiddos.

Congrats on winning the costume contest! You looked authentic, especially since you were cooking, too!

  11. You look awesome! I was telling my husband about your costumes last night, and told him I was excited to see the picture for this year. You didn’t disappoint!

We didn’t stay home for trick-or-treaters – we took the kids out to another neighborhood where there were better houses (I don’t live in the ghetto, but I’m not in the best area either.) By the end of the night we were on a street that hadn’t gotten hardly any trick-or-treaters, so they were just putting handfuls of candy into the kids’ bags. They had a good night.

  12. Wow you looked amazing! What a fun office you work in Biz.

No trick or treaters we went out to eat and to a movie!

  13. BIZ! I made that gumbo (from your post yesterday) this morning so we could have it tonight. HELP! I need the directions for how to NOT EAT IT ALL BEFORE HUBS GETS HOME! DE-freaking-licious!

  14. Ahahaha!! I would NOT have known who you were but that’s hilarious!!

  15. DiningAndDishing

haha, that costume is AMAZING!!! i love when people really go for it. congrats on the win biz! 🙂

  16. great costume, Biz! i love it 🙂

  17. I absolutely love it. MOST awesome costume. I knew you would pull that off beautifully. I do like that list of “Interview Fails” too. Wow, that’s funny.

I thought of you last night at 3 am when I couldn’t sleep. I decided to make bagels – and although I have never made them before I found this really cool & easy recipe on and asked myself “What would Bizzy do? Why, make bagels of course.

They ROCK! I think I even impressed the family. heehee

Then I went to sleep for 6 hours 🙂

    Thanks again for the inspiration!

  18. Congrats Biz!

We had no trick or treaters…we were flying home from Florida last night! The flight attendants on the plane did dress up though 🙂

  19. Love the costume! And Dexter rocks– yay new attorney! Although I have to say I don’t think mentioning a bible study group should be a negative during a job interview. Lying about a job? Yes. Mentioning your religion? No. EEOE and all…

We didn’t have any trick or treaters last night. I wasn’t expecting any since we’re a lone winter rental vacation home, surrounded by vacant homes for the season and really far back from the road. I didn’t even buy candy! So we went to a friend’s house for dinner. They didn’t get any trick or treaters either, so we all munched on the candy bowl to console ourselves. haha

  20. Your costume is amazing! Congrats on the win!

  21. LOL at Jimmy Buffet! You would have looked even closer to Guy if you could get some black roots showing in the ‘do 😀

  22. oh my gosh! Your costume is awesomeeeeeeeeeee! And I totally want to try putting Thai chili sauce in my next set of burgers. Fantastic. Sorry you didn’t get many trick or treaters!

  23. Oh Biz you totally cracked me up with your awesome costume!! I love your sense of humor and your food is always delectable 🙂

  24. Great costume!

I really like the slaw on the burgers, looks like a great, crunchy addition to the burgers.

  25. wow! that burger looks awesome. this is my first visit to your blog. love it!

  26. Dexter is my favorite show ever!!! We got over 100 trick or treaters. That’s what you get when you live in Beaver Cleaver town as I like to call my little Temecula.

  27. Congrats on winning the costume contest, and five years in a row!! I remember you winning from last year. Sounds like a fun office party!

  28. LOL I don’t know who Jimmy Buffet is, but you’re completely credible as him!

  29. Great costume…so fun.

We had about 25 trick or treaters

  30. Hi Biz! My heart raced for a moment–I thought your post said “I won…” $50,000…but then I looked again and it *actually* said “it won…” $50,000…I thought *you* had won the 50 grand. I’m calm again, but a little sadder for the experience that you did not win the 50 grand.

However, I’m very glad you won for your costume. I didn’t even notice you in there. Totally doesn’t look like a girl anywhere near! Amazing!

    😀 Marion

  31. wow! definitely an impressive costume!!!

  32. You look awesome, Biz! I’m loving that costume!

And your Thai burgers look great!

  33. Andy and I were cracking up at your costume for awhile! SO SO GOOD!

We didn’t get any trick or treaters this year. Not even one! I was bummed.

  34. Your costume made me laugh so hard!! You looked awesome!
We had maybe 10 kids come to our door. 1st year living here, so we bought about 300 pieces of candy. I guess the kids I work with will enjoy them!

  35. You look awesome Biz! Great costume. Your Halloween party sounds like it was a blast. Halloween was a bust for us here in Western Mass. thanks to the snowstorm. We are going to do something later in the week so my little guy can dress up in his costume. We didn’t have any trick or treaters but we don’t usually get any because we live on a main road with no sidewalks. This saves me from having to be tempted by candy in the house! I walked away from Halloween this year virtually unscathed save for a few mini candy bars at work.

  36. Best costume ever! So funny. Lied about their education, like no one would find out? Well back in my Harvard days after graduating from Oxford, this would never do! Hahahaha! Brining their hubby to the interview- really, who does that? Weird.

    • 213I not to mention my finreds ended up looking at the great secrets and techniques on the blog and so at once I had a terrible suspicion I had not thanked the blog owner for those secrets. My ladies are already for this reason warmed to see them and now have truly been loving these things. Thanks for simply being well kind and for picking out this kind of wonderful subject areas most people are really desirous to know about. Our sincere regret for not expressing appreciation to earlier.

  37. Hi Guy! Very creative on the costume! Another Hallowinner!
