I Let Him Sleep With Me

I got to the hospital around 8:00 a.m.  I like to get there before the doctor does his morning rounds.  Tony’s incision looks great – looks just like my c-section scar!  He was so tired yesterday, he basically cat napped during the day.  It’s hard to get rest in the hospital – it has to be the nosiest place on earth, people talking loudly in the hall way.

At one point Tony finally had been asleep for about a half hour when a food service worker knocked on the door loudly and shouted “Bed 2 Food Service!”  It literally made Tony jump out of bed!  We told her “you don’t have to shout” and she said “well most of our patients are hard of hearing!”

So I sat beside him, touching his hand letting him know I was there.  And mostly watched t.v. and read a couple food magazines.  It seriously is more tiring than if I went to the gym, worked all day, came home and cooked and cleaned!

Hannah was just getting home from work when I got home.  I had leftover beef stew and rasperries and blackberries for lunch, and McDonald’s oatmeal for breakfast.  I didn’t eat in the room because Tony’s roommate was only allowed 1/2 a cup of ice chips every eight hours!  I thought it would be rude for me to have him smell beef stew!

I ate around 1:00, and by the time I got home around 8:15 I was starving.  So Hannah and I each had a plate of nachos – probably 2 ounces of chips, 4 ounces of taco meat, cheese and 100 calories packs of guacamole, all while watching the Biggest Loser Finale.

I only got our dog to come out of our bedroom to go outside to go to the bathroom, and then he went straight back to our room.  He’s really lost without Tony.  He actually put himself between my side of the bed and the wall, which is about the width of his body. 😦

After Biggest Loser Hannah wanted to play Yatzee.  As tired as I was and I really wanted to go to bed, we played one game, where I of course dominated and won 303 to 197.  Yep, that’s how I roll!  Ha!

By 10:45 I was spent, but then the dog started shaking.  I turned on the humidifier and decided he could sleep with me in bed, something we haven’t let him do since he was a year old, and he’s probably 12?

Mind you, he’s 90 pounds of dog and literally takes up half the bed.  I slept on Tony’s side of the bed, and he slept with his head on my stomach.  I just had one hand on his back, and he settled down and went to sleep.  Hopefully Hannah can get him out during the day today!

So no pictures, I hung out with Hannah instead of downloading my pictures.  I am going to work today, but will be able to spend about an hour with Tony this morning.  Sadly my office is too far away now to visit him at lunch – by the time I got there I’d have all of about 15 minutes!

But I’ll go there right after work.  Hopefully today we’ll have a better idea of when he’ll be coming home. 😀

Question of the Day:  If you are married or live with someone and they are not there, do you still sleep on your side of the bed, their side of the bed or in the middle?  Usually without the dog in bed, I tend to sleep in the middle!

Hope you have a great day and thanks for your continued support! 😀

  1. I stick to my side of the bed no matter what. And if, for some reason, Dave is not there, the dogs are invited up. Kharma tends to move back down to her dog bed on the floor. Darwin usually takes up his spot where Dave’s feet usually go!

Hopefully Tony can come home soon!

  2. Even though I haven’t commented (I’ve been out of town) I’ve been thinking about you and Tony. Wishing him a speedy recovery!

  3. I’m glad Tony’s surgery went well, Biz! I can completely understand what you are saying about being so tired sitting around the hospital. My youngest daughter was in the hospital for 3 months following a surgery at birth and it was the longest, most exhausting 3 months of my life! I think the stress of being at the hospital and worrying about your loved one is what makes is so exhausting, both mentally and physically. Hugs to you!

  4. I can’t sleep well if Pooldad isn’t here, but I guess if I could I would stay on my side.

You might want to ask the nurses if you can close Tony’s door. To keep the heat in my room when I am in the hospital I keep the door closed with a handwritten note on it to please knock before entering. They always did. What I really hated is when they would knock on the door when it was already opened – like for food service. Just calling my name works fine, tyvm.

I know Pooldad is wiped out when I go in the hospital because not only does he have to work, take care of the house and visit me he has Wallene to take care of too [before it was both Wallene and Squirrel] – I feel so bad when I ask him to come stay with me, but I am absolutely terrified of being alone in the hospital and he knows it. Poor guy – when our insurance finally kicks in he will be back doing it all over again.

Glad the pup stopped shaking and got to sleep in the bed. He probably feels closer to Tony up there.

And Tony? Make it home soon! I think Biz wants the pup out of the bed.

  5. That was so nice of you to not eat in the hospital room. It is little things like that that patients really appreciate.

I definitely sleep in the middle, with my little croissant of a dog curled up by my tummy.

  6. I hope Tony gets to come home soon so that all of you – Tony, you and Ed can get some good rest!

  7. Glad that Tony’s surgery went well. I have such a hard time falling asleep without the hubby there, but I still sleep on my side. I’m a creature of habit, I guess!

  8. I always let the dog sleep with me while Ray is deployed, or when he is work the midnight shift. I’m weird and actually sleep on Ray’s side of the bed while he is gone, I’m not really sure why, but I like it better. Now that I’m at my mom’s for the holidays, I sleep in the middle of the bed and Otie sleeps across the bottom.

  9. You’re such a wonderful nurse 🙂 I’m sure Tony appreciates it all! When Josh isn’t home, I still sleep on the same side!

  10. Patients always complain about never getting any rest in hospitals. Kind of wrong and ironic. I hope he is home soon for everyone’s sake…especially Ed. That just breaks my heart to read! Lily and I are at my parents this week and even though my mom was up she had a complete meltdown outside my door this morning. Ugh. I wanted to sleep in, dog!! Oh well.

I had to laugh about you and Yatzee…my in-laws are CRAZY about that game and my SIL always kicks major ass. I should really practice – there is some strategy there!! 🙂

Thinking about you and Tony — hugs!

  11. My side of the bed. Glad to hear Tony’s surgery went well and I wish him a quick recovery. How is your mom doing Biz? Hope you find some rest for yourself! I am crazy over here trying to get things done in time, too much! Have a great Wednesday.

  12. I still sleep on my side of the bed when Jeff is gone, but his side ends up being covered with magazines, my netbook, tv remotes…so I guess I do spread out, lol! Hope poor Ed relaxes a bit – that was nice of you to let him sleep on the bed.

Fingers crossed Tony continues to heal well!

  13. Oh my gosh I love when my dog sleeps with us (he’s a little Chihuahua),but my husband doesn’t like it. Brutus is really our 11yr olds dog so he sleeps with her. But every morning when he wakes up he comes and jumps into our bed. He’s such a snuggler.

  14. What a tough day for you. It must be weird sleeping without Tony there.
Hope Tony can go home soon!

  15. Poor dog, missing Tony like that! I’m glad you let him sleep with you, though. I probably would have done the same.

MAK and I rarely sleep apart, unless he falls asleep on the couch or is up late studying. It’s hard to fall asleep when that other body is not next to you, so I definitely gravitate towards the middle when he’s not in bed with me! He usually takes up 2/3 of the space (bed hog!) so I kind of enjoy being able to sprawl out, even if I miss his warmth. 🙂

Thinking of you and Tony! Hope he can come home soon!

  16. When my hubby isn’t home, I still sleep on my side of the bed, but I’ll often hold one of his pillows or something. Rarely I will let a child sleep with me, but all of my kids are flailers, and I inevitably end up being kicked or smacked in the face or something. I never sleep well with the kids.

  17. Awwww….poor, Ed! Glad Tony’s surgery went well! Hope you get to bring him home soon!

When my hubby’s gone, I start off on my side of the bed early in the week, but eventually take over the entire bed by the end of the week.

  18. I sleep in the middle! I also park my car in the middle of the garage when he’s away, too. 🙂

  19. I am so glad Tony is doing okay. Just take care of yourself so you’re ready for when he comes home.
I sleep on Jim’s side and the dog sleeps on mine. And the same when I’m gone, Jim takes my side and Wilbur takes his.
Take care and have a blessed afternoon.

  20. Your poor guys! Hope Tony gets to come home tomorrow, then they both can get some rest! You were sweet to let Ed sleep with you! 🙂
Take care of yourself Biz, you have a lot on your plate!!!

  21. Glad Tony is doing ok! I know how hard it is to rest in the hospital too. When I had surgery on a tumor on my neck two years ago, I had to stay overnight and I had one person on each side of the floor yelling at the top of their lungs “HELP! I’M BEING ABUSED!! POLICE!” All night long!

    Take care Biz!! (((HUGS)))

  22. I sleep on my side of the bed. The dogs get his. We have two Labradors. When they aren’t on the bed, his side is cluttered with my books, magazines, etc.

I’m glad the surgery went well. I hope Tony gets to come home soon. The hospital is an exhausting place.

  23. glad to hear that tony’s surgery went well! it must be hard to have a worried dog and no way to explain to him that tony will be home soon. i’m sure sleeping with you last night calmed him down…definitely worth letting him into the bed!

  24. Roz@weightingfor50

Fingers crossed Tony is home soon. Awww..your poor pup. Sending hugs Vat!!! take care

  25. Oh don’t even get me started about loud hospital staff! I work nights and I’m usually the one telling people to keep it down when they visit the unit I work on.

I always sleep on my side of the bed. I feel funny on the other side.

Healing thoughts going out to Tony. Hopefully he’ll be home soon. Make sure to take care of yourself too 🙂

  26. Healing prayers for Tony! You are such a loving and caring partner Biz. I love it when you wrote that you sat and held his hand!

When my hubby is gone I sleep on my side of the bed and I hardly move all night long – it’s really strange. But he has traveld for business for most of our 32 years of marriage so I am use to sleeping by myself a few nights a month.

  27. Im glad tonys getting rest but id have decked that nurse 😉

Like most nights if hubs is home or not I sleep wherever the poodle lets me (not exactly sure how he got SO spoiled)
