Exercise Apps!

Okay, seriously.  This weather has got to get better.  Storms, rain and high of 40 yesterday.  Right now its raining, dreary and dark.  I suppose I could handle the cold weather if it was just sunny outside. Sad smile

Yesterday’s breakfast was delicious – I made an egg white, habanero cheese, spinach wrap with a Pear Chobani on the side.  Normally I douse my food with hot sauce, but um, this cheese??  No hot sauce required!  And check out the price!

I love the Chobani spoon I got in the last package they sent me.

You’d think Chobani paid me for how much I talk about them, but other than getting some free yogurt every now and then, I really do think it’s the best Greek yogurt out there.  I used to use Fage back when Greek yogurt was all the rage, but it was expensive.  Now I can score Chobani on sale for 10/$10 about every three weeks. Open-mouthed smile

You will all be so proud of me!  I was able to put my iTunes on my iPhone!  Yes, I know I’ve had this phone for two months now, but just never got around to it.  Turns out I have $43 dollars in gift cards too!  I remember at one point my stepson didn’t use iTunes anymore, and I traded him cash for the cards.

What never dawned on me was that I could use that money to download exercise apps!  I kept thinking I could only use if for music.  Duh!

My gym has spin classes, but they aren’t at convenient times for me.  Since the gym is by my office, I’d have to drive 30 minutes to go to a spin class on Saturday and Sunday.  Not gonna happen.

So I googled spin apps, and found this one called Cycle Coach.  You get to pick your trainer, level of intensity, etc.  They had a 10 minute trial, but for .99 cents you could download additional workouts.

Sarah

I chose Sarah as my coach.  You can choose to use her music or your own, I just used her music.  It was 41:31 minutes long, and it actually was if I had a spin instructor right in front of me.  We did a warm-up, seated climb, passing, jog/run, accent/decent hill, jumps and a standing climb.

Um, let me just tell you about the jumps.  If you don’t know what that is, it’s going from a sitting position to a standing jogging position and you keep going up and down.  The first set was 8 seconds seated, 8 seconds standing, for two minutes.  Then it got to 4 seconds standing and 4 seconds sitting.  The last minute??  2 seconds sitting and 2 seconds standing!

It was really a great workout – and I plan on spinning at least 3 times a week. Open-mouthed smile  Sorry this is blurry, but I had the spin room all to myself.

The one thing that’s different from the last time I took an actual spin class, is that the bikes are digital now, so you know exactly what gear you are in – and there is no knob to turn right or left, just a lever up and down.  Weird thing though about these bikes?  No water bottle holder – weird!

I told you I was going to morph my leftover pasta dish from the night before into lunch for me and my boss today.  I ended up taking the pasta, adding an 8 ounce jar of tomato sauce with Italian seasoning and crushed red pepper, then adding 1 cup of fat free cottage cheese and more spinach.

I divided the mixture into two containers.  I heated each container in the microwave for 2 minutes, then put it in an oven safe bowl, topped it with 1/4 cup extra fine shredded Italian cheese and put it under the broiler in the toaster oven. (fyi, that is a salad plate, not a dinner plate) Open-mouthed smile

Then had an orange and an apple on the side.

I defrosted a steak that I froze a couple weeks ago.  While this seems pricey, this was two dinners and a breakfast for me, so about $2.20 per serving.  Last time I checked I don’t ever remember seeing steak on a restaurant menu for $2.20. Open-mouthed smile

Since it was crappy outside, I had to use my indoor grill.  My rule of thumb for rare/medium rare steak is 2x2x2x2 – meaning cooking each side for two minutes, flipping it to get the grill marks, and cooking each side another two minutes each.

Since my indoor grill doesn’t get nearly as hot as my outdoor grill, my rule of thumb is 3x3x3x3.  I also let the meat rest about 6 minutes after I take it off the grill.  I do take pride in my grill marks!

We had the first corn of the season, which was from Georgia, and it tasted like ass.  Oh well, we tried!  With green beans on the side and a tablespoon of my leftover chimichurri sauce.  If you haven’t already tried it, put hot sauce on your corn – you will thank me later.

So I downloaded another exercise program that I am going to do today.  It’s called Workout Trainer

The part I love about it is that it has tons of videos and pictures, so that you actually know what exercise you are doing.  Since my legs are a bit sore today from the spin yesterday, today I am doing a workout called “Absolute Arms.”  It’s described as “This ain’t your grandma’s workout!”  It’s 20 minutes long, then I plan on swimming for 20 minutes.

Stats for the Day:

  • 45 minute spin bike (included cool down)
  • 1481 calories, 54 fat, 146 carbs, 20 fiber, 108 protein, 2061 sodium
  • 40% from carbs, 33% from fat and 27% from protein

Alright, off to make breakfast wontons and put together lunch.  Do you use any exercise apps?   Would love to try out more!  Make it a great day!

  1. We have a snowstorm today! (I know, you are jealous.)

Of course, I’ve used the Couch to 5k app. I recently downloaded GymPact, but I haven’t used it yet because I’m waiting for the go ahead from my Dr. next week on working out. However, what you do is pledge how many times a week you are going to work out and how much you’ll pay if you skip a workout. You have to login to measure that you HAVE worked out. For each week that you keep your promise, YOU get paid for working out. I’m curious about it and looking forward to trying it!

  2. Cruise Control for running (LOVE) and Daily Cardio Workout FREE (I think I then purchased the full edition…I use the Daily Cardio for when I need a HIIT type workout, I most often use it while strength training to keep my HR elevated to get the best fat burning possible out of my strength training. I have tried many, but these are my favs 🙂

  3. oh, and just to warm you, it was 88 here in SC yesterday 😉 and 79 in my house, cant get the AC to kick on! I grew up in the Wisco Tundra, feel your pain- but not this winter!!! 😉

  4. I think I’m technologically challenged with my I phone. I’ve had it since last October and have yet to use it to its full capability! I wasn’t aware of exercise apps but what a cool idea! Gonna have to check those out! That spin looks tough as shit! Woo I bet you are sore! The food looks yumsville and a pat on the back to you for the bombass grill marks! Looks like restaurant style!!! It’s rainy here too…storms kept waking me last night and I missed my morning workout….this weather is killing me!!

    • Mary, you can watch some youtube videos to find out how to use all the features of your phone too – I am much better at watching someone show me how to use the phone than to figure it out on my own. However, both our kids can master their phones in a matter of hours!

  5. I used to hate yogurt, but Chobani has changed my mind!

  6. Ok, I should totally try some of these apps, I am kind of in an exercise rut and need to add some different workouts. I know cross training is so important but it’s easy to just do what you know, plus I hate weights, should change my attitude, I know.

  7. There are so many apps out there. Thanks for sharing. I use Spark People sometimes for exercise demos. I have tried Nike Trainer. You Tube is also great for workout videos and it’s free.

  8. That spin app sounds great! I only use runkeeper and I love it. I love how you re-purpose your leftovers. Nice job. You should come cook Josh’s steaks for me..I feel like I stink at it. Chobani is the BEST!

  9. We had a tornado watch last night but thankfully no tornadoes. I am so over bad weather.

I like Sparkpeople for strength training demos, a yoga app for beginners, and My Fitness Pal.

  10. I think I’m the only person in the word who doesn’t have a smartphone….lol. The app sounds pretty awesome, though!

  11. I wish I hadn’t been lactose intolerant when Chobani finally hit the shelves at a reasonable price. I have never had any of their yogurts! Only Fage when it started all the greek yogurt popularity!

  12. I just posted a picture of my windshield on fb, it’s covered in ice. That’s crazy! I think you’ve posted exercise stuff from Pinterest before, it’s a great place to switch up your routine 🙂

  13. Awesome exercise apps! I’ve never used one…will have to take a look and maybe try one out! 🙂

  14. Just remember, even those of us living in sunny and warm locales have our problems. It’s only April and I’m already so tired of dragging the hose around. While you’re wondering where the sun is, I’m wondering where my rain is.

I used to spin all the time; great workout if you get the right teacher. Is the app weird? I don’t know if I’d like working out with an app; I’m eager to hear how you like it after you use it for a while.

    • It actually felt like I was at an actual class, only she was in my ear, not in front of me! As we were hill climbing she would say “are you going as fast as you can – push harder” and it made me work harder!

  15. I use the Nike Training Club app. It’s GREAT. It has workout routines for you organized by type and body part you want to focus on. It includes videos of the exercises. And it’s FREE. Love it.

  16. I’m totally with you regarding the weather. Enough already!! Shazam had a hard time yesterday with the storms, and I felt terrible not being home with him. Plus, walking is not nearly as fun in the cold + rain. 😦

Just fyi . . . I saw that Whole Foods is having a 1-day sale tomorrow: fresh Pacific Halibut for $12.88/lb. Halibut is usually more than $20/lb, so we don’t eat it too often. But it’s Bob’s favorite, so I always keep an eye out for it. I couldn’t remember–is this a fish you like? It’s very steak-like and mild. Most non-seafood lovers like it. 🙂

    Happy Thursday!

    • Thanks for the heads up – I may need to try that fish, for this non-fish lover! Chilean Sea Bass is the one I like, its meaty, yet flaky, but that sells for $21 a pound at Fresh Market and WF!

  17. My husband started putting sriracha in his corn and I love that! It really is a nice contrast to the sweet corn! You guys are geniuses. Chobani is also my fave Greek yogurt, I feel it has the best consistency–so incredibly thick and creamy.

  18. I’ve had my iphone since October and I still don’t know how to use itunes. I never even thought to add or look for exercise apps, as soon as i can get the phone back from the 5 year old…I’ll find some 😉

  19. Hooray for more veggies! =D

I would love it to be 40 degrees – It’s almost 90 here and my apartment hasn’t switched over from heat to A/C yet…

  20. I’ve been craving corn on the cob!!! Guess I’ll hold off, haha.
I love the Nike Training App, and the 100 pushups app, but those are the only 2 I really use. I love my iphone, though – best thing EVER!!! 🙂

  21. No workout apps here – no workouts aside from long walks with the bebe and holding him most of the day! 😉

And I’m SO WITH YOU on the weather….seriously?! I have a mud swamp in my backyard. Where do we live?!?!?

  22. That steak looks awesome! I love good grilled outside then bleeding on the inside 🙂 I don’t use exercise apps, I mostly just stick to kettle bells and walking.

    • Yep, we like our meat black and blue – Tony likes to tell server when we go out that he doesn’t mind if his meat is still quivering on his plate when served!

  23. You are a machine, girl! Good for you! And I wish we could rush the corn season,,,

  24. I’m cheap, so I’ve never bought a fitness app to use on my phone. I guess I don’t want to end up paying for something I don’t like. That being said, i can’t say I’ve ever really thought to even look for a fitness app. I might be into my smartphone, but not so much into apps for everything. I just like my twitter, facebook, gmail, and games 🙂 Oh, and NHL app!

  25. Hey Biz!

Love the eats! I’ve been meaning to buy corn on the cob all week…my nearly 8 year old finally lost her 2nd front tooth…I luv it! I totally want to watch her try to eat corn on the cob and record it! I know…I’m such a good mother! lol

BTW…do you have an email address for your blog?? I wanted to give you some more info about Etsy, but would prefer to do so privately…xox

Or you can email me if my email shows with the comment.

  26. Good eat, and exercise…you live a healthy life, Biz. Can you believe that I have never had a Chobani? Not sure I can find them here, but I do love yogurt.

  27. I just discovered your blog, and I’m so glad I did! I’ve been scared to try spinning (afraid that I won’t be good or be able to keep up, or…. you get the idea). This app seems like the ideal “into” to spinning for me. I can use it on the off hours when the spin room at my gym is empty. Thank you!!

BTW, I love the bowl your pasta was in. Adorbs!

  28. I love it how there are apps these days for everything. I have downloaded Nike Training Club (NTC) on my phone but haven’t use it yet. It got lots of different strength workouts. You might like it too.
